Ian Deaves takes his first win in the MGOC at Mallory
Class A / F
A good grid of 21 sports cars took to the track for their qualifying session. The first four rows of the grid were taken by MGF's with Paul Savage taking pole position ahead of Ian Deaves with Martin Wills, Paul Naish, Ian Evans, Nick Dunn, Robin Walker and Peter Tomlin all within one seciond of the pole position time. Row 5 saw Jim Baynam on Class A pole ahead of Malcolm Hill with the 1275 Midget of Dave Rees.
A number of the front runners started creeping forward as the red lights were held on for an unusually long time but no-one was penalised and Deaves cut in front of Savage to take the crucial inside line around the first corner. At the end of the opening lap, Deaves Held a slender lead from savage with Wills, Dunn, Walker and Naish battling for position just behind. Stuart Philps started from the back of the grid after failing to complete three laps in qualifying but was making excellent progress and had climbed from 21st to 10th by lap 5.
Further down the field, Hill made an excellent start to take an early lead in Class A from Baynam, Rees, Dave van Gils, John Kimber and Kym Bradshaw.
Deaves was driving well and, with Savage being pressed hard by Wills, looked in control at the front. Wills eventually slipped past Savage on lap 7 and began closing in on the leader but Deaves kept his head and went on to take a well deserved first ever MGOC win ahead of Wills with Savage taking 3rd place after a race long battle with Dunn. Naish finally managed to get past Walker and began to challenge Dunn but ran out of laps and had to settle for 4th place and a new lap record.
